The formal launch of the expanded DRUM program was held at the Indian Habitat Center on October 14, 2004 with an all-day program where the American Ambassador, Hon. Mr. David C. Mulford, gave the keynote address and the Secretary Energy, Hon. Mr. R V Shahi provided introductory remarks. A full should stick house of more than 150 people attended the event, including several industry luminaries and members of the press along with Joint Secretary of Power Arvind Jadhav; Mr. Prasad, the Chairman and Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Corporation; and Mr. McCracken, Program Advisor of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service.
Implementing partners of each of the major components of the DRUM Program made presentations, with a special presentation by the representatives of the U.S. Rural Utility Service (RUS) team and India’s Rural Electrification Corporation (REC). The focus of the meeting was on rural electrification issues, which is the highest priority of the current central government.
